DC Statehood Greens mourn party leader Henry MosesTHE DC STATEHOOD GREEN PARTY For immediate release: Contact: Leader in the fight for hotel workers' rights and DC statehood, organizer of the Rhythm Workers Union, former Statehood Green Party steering committee member WASHINGTON, DC -- DC Statehood Green Party members are mourning one of their own: Henry Moses, a former member of the party's steering committee, passed away on Thursday, October 25. A native of Washington, DC's Ward 7, Mr. Moses succumbed to cancer and pneumonia complicated by AIDS. He was 39. Mr. Moses recently worked on the campaign to elect Renee Bowser to the Ward 4 seat on City Council, in a special election last May. As a steering committee member in the party in 2002, Mr. Moses led DC Statehood Green outreach efforts, trained Statehood Greens in using the party's database, and participated in a panel on DC statehood in April, 2002. Mr. Moses was also a founding member and organizer of the Rhythm Workers Union <http://www.rhythmworkersunion.org>, a musical percussion ensemble, and served as a staff member for United for Peace & Justice <http://www.unitedforpeace.org>. "Henry Moses, my soul mate and organizing partner for seven years, taught me everything I know about DC," said Kristen Arant, who founded the Rhythm Workers Union along with Mr. Moses and also served on the Statehood Green steering committee. "He originally hired me for a research job at Local 25 that led to my organizing efforts with a myriad of peace and justice organizations around DC. In addition, he was a mentor to many young women in the Young Women's Drumming Empowerment Project, where he served as the Project Assistant for the past three years. Whether he was drumming, doling out useful knowledge and advice, standing up for people's rights, or helping to create a safe space for young women, Henry was a man of service and integrity." Henry Moses worked as research director for UNITE HERE Local 25 (formerly HERE) <http://www.unitehere.org>, and was the "genius" behind landmark organizing agreements with Mandarin Hotel, Embassy Suites Hotel, and the Marriott Convention Center Hotel that have benefitted thousands of DC area workers and their families. Mr. Moses helped persuade the State of Maryland to press Gaylord Entertainment to sign an agreement in connection with the National Harbor Development project. The agreement allowed workers to organize and helped over 2,000 families. A memorial service for Henry Moses will take place Tuesday evening, October 30 at 8 pm (visitation at 7 pm) Henry S. Washington & Sons Funeral Home, 4925 Nannie Helen Bouroughs Ave NE in Washington, DC. The Rhythm Workers Union will play a tribute to Mr. Moses at the end of the service.
