WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The Green Party of the United States announced today that all previous numbers of Green elected officials and voters registered in the party have been surpassed:

  • The number of elected Greens has topped 200, with 205 elected officials in 26 states, as of November 18.

  • The number of Americans registered in the Green Party has topped 300,000, with 302,120 in 22 states according to Ballot Access News. (Some states do not provide numbers for party registrations, or for registrations outside the Democratic and Republican parties.)

"Our numbers have increased steadily, even though some states make it quite difficult for third parties to achieve ballot status," said Ben Manski, Wisconsin Green and co-chair of the Green Party of the United States. "Democratic and Republican state legislators have often worked together to pass laws blocking third parties, third party candidates, and independents.  Ironically, they've made it necessary for Greens and other third parties to place presidential candidates on the ballot in order to win or maintain official ballot status."

The Green Party currently has ballot access in 21 states, with Nebraska close to becoming the 22nd. 43 state Green Parties are now affiliated with the Green Party of the United States.

Ballot Access News reported in September, 2002 that the Green Party grew by 27.7% between 2000 and 2002; all other national political parties lost percentages.

"We're looking forward to similar or even greater growth in the next few years, thanks to strong Green candidates and campaigns across the U.S. in 2004," said Juscha Robinson, co-chair of the national party's Coordinated Campaign Committee. "We expect more races like the today's runoff in San Francisco, where the latest pre-Election Day polls placed Green candidate Matt Gonzalez in a dead heat with a millionaire Democrat for mayor."
