GREEN CANDIDATES RUN STRONG IN ATTORNEY GENERAL RACES

Attorney General races demonstrate Green vitality and commitment to enforcing the law

Washington, D.C. While Green candidates for Governor and Congress get the most attention due to their impact on election results next Tuesday, Green Party candidates are running for a wide variety of offices. Among them are seven seeking office as Attorney General. The responsibility to represent the public interest in the courts is key to the Green platform and well represented by these candidates.

In Delaware, Vivian Houghton is a former Democrat who managed many victorious campaigns for that party until recently switching to the Green Party, and has received endorsements from the United Auto Workers and the Coalition of Black Trade Unionists. "I spent years working for the Democratic Party and learned from the inside that Delaware's Attorney General was not working first for the people of Delaware, but for the corporations that choose to park their headquarters here. I finally realized it couldn't be fixed from the inside, and that the Green Party was where the solution would come from."

In Texas, Green Party Legal Advisor David Cobb is running for Attorney General and has an extensive background in corporate legal status through his work as associate with the non-partisan Program on Corporations, Law and Democracy. "If elected, I will use the office of Attorney General to assist local governments and community groups to draft local laws to assert local, democratic control over corporations. I will initiate charter revocation proceedings against those corporations which flagrantly violate state and federal laws."

In Colorado, Alison "Sunny" Maynard has been litigating water rights, land trust and voter fraud issue in the public interest for 15 years. "I'm running because far too often, I've had to represent citizens who are fighting their government over official decisions made to benefit wealthy private interests, not the public interest. Instead of protecting the public, the incumbent Democrat has protected polluters and fraudulent business interests. I decided it was my civic duty to run, so that our laws are enforced and the powers of the Attorney General used in the manner they were intended to be used: to protect the people."

These candidates and their background demonstrate the long-term commitment that Green candidates have for rolling up their sleeves and working for Americans, and why Green candidates are gaining more support and momentum nationwide.
