GREEN PARTY TARGETS STRATEGIC STATE AND LOCAL RACES IN THE 2004 ELECTION

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The Green Party of the United States has identified a list of 39 candidates who will receive various kinds of support from the national party.

Out of these 39 candidates, 12 have been selected to receive matching funds for their campaigns. The selection was made by the party's Coordinated Campaign Committee.

At least 414 Greens have declared their candidacy for public office in 40 states across the U.S. so far in 2004.

"The candidates we've selected are those who are running high-profile campaigns, who are exceptional in their ability to represent the Green Party, and who are likely to make a strong showing on Election Day -- with possible victories," said Amy Heart, co-chair of the Coordinated Campaign Committee. "Along with national nominees David Cobb and Pat LaMarche, we have an outstanding slate of Green candidates in 2004."

The Green Party is promoting and assisting all 39 candidates through donor lists, media outreach, web site help, enlistment of volunteers, and other organizational support.

At least five state Green Parties are running record numbers of candidates in 2004: Washington (13), Maine (26), Maryland (16), Michigan (44), Oregon (16). In 2004 races up to now, 28 Greens have been elected to public office, a 44% victory rate.
