The Wisconsin Green Party and the Libertarian Party of Wisconsin join in
calling upon Governor Doyle to reject and resist any proposed Pentagon rule
changes that would allow the further deployment of the Wisconsin National
Guard beyond the current 24-month limit.
Both parties take the position that the Wisconsin National Guard was
founded to provide security in the case of domestic unrest and to help the
state deal with natural disasters.
"Deployment for occupation of a foreign land is a misuse of our Wisconsin
National Guard," said Jim Maas, Secretary of the Libertarian Party of Wisconsin and a Guard veteran. "We call on Governor Doyle to bring our
Wisconsin Guard troops home now."
Wisconsin Greens have organized and participated in rallies and vigils to
stop the U.S. invasion of Iraq, and to end the U.S. occupation of Iraq. At
their Spring Gathering and Membership meeting in West Bend, WI on April
29th, 2006, the Wisconsin Green Party passed a resolution calling upon
Governor Doyle to veto further deployment of National Guard troops to Iraq
and surrounding areas.
"Governor Doyle must use his authority as commander in chief of the
Wisconsin National Guard to stand up to any new Pentagon rules that will
allow any additional deployment of National Guard troops beyond the current
24 months," said Nelson Eisman, former Wisconsin Green candidate for Governor. "Furthermore, we call upon him to exercise his authority to
keep the Wisconsin National Guard within its constitutional mandate, and bring
the troops home now."
