Vogeler Challenges Senator Kohl to Sign the “Declaration of Peace”Wisconsin Green Party Rae Vogeler: 608-695-2695 or 608-237-1337, rae-v@charter.net September 25, 2006 Candidate Calls on Kohl and Congress to end the U.S. War and Occupation of Iraq MILWAUKEE -- Wisconsin Green Party candidate for U.S. Senate Rae Vogeler has signed on to the Declaration of Peace. The Declaration of Peace is a nationwide effort to establish a concrete and rapid plan for peace in Iraq. "2,693 United States soldiers have died in the Iraq war. I grieve for them and their families. I am appalled that these brave soldiers have sacrificed and died for a government that lied to them,” states Vogeler. “The truth is that this war should never have been fought: there were no weapons of mass destruction, Iraq was not responsible for 9/11, and we have brought civil war, not democracy, to that country. “It’s time we bring our young men and women home. It’s time we protect working families in America from the real threats they are facing. We need to redirect the bloated military budget to fund universal healthcare, family-supporting jobs and public education through college.” The goals of the Declaration of Peace are to:
The Declaration of Peace creators called upon Congress to create and activate this plan by September 21, 2006. Since Congress has not activated this plan, declaration signers will engage in nonviolent protests in Washington D.C., and in communities throughout the nation. Nationally coordinated nonviolent activities will continue until the United States withdraws from Iraq and supports a comprehensive peace process. “Senator Herb Kohl refuses to sign the Declaration of Peace. This should be no great surprise. Kohl voted to authorize the war in Iraq, and against redeploying U.S. troops out of Iraq,” says Vogeler. “The people of Wisconsin voted overwhelming against this war in the antiwar referendums last spring. I call on Senator Kohl to represent the people of Wisconsin and sign on to the Declaration of Peace.” Activists will be attending demonstrations and vigils at all of Senator Kohl’s Wisconsin offices this week to remember those soldiers who have given their lives and to urge Senator Kohl to sign the Declaration of Peace. Rae Vogeler will publicly challenge Senator Kohl to sign the declaration at the Peace Fest in Milwaukee. Peace Fest will be held on Saturday, September 23 from 12:00 - 4:00 p.m at Pere Marquette Park, on the corner of Old World Third St. and Kilbourn St. The public is invited to join Rae at this event.
