Lt. Governor Candidate Duncan Calls for Strong Local Economic DevelopmentGreen Party of New York State October 30, 2006 Contact: Ann Link 347-226-1195 eas-@hotmail.com NEW YORK, NY -- "We can meet New York's employment needs by meeting all our food, energy, health care and education needs in New York State," said Alison Duncan, Green Party candidate for Lieutenant Governor. "New York spends a great deal of money out of state, and in some cases out of the country, to meet the needs of New Yorkers. If their needs are met here, they can be better met for a fraction of the cost and jobs will be created." "Buying more food from local farmers is a good example of how we can better meet our needs in-state," said Duncan. "A certain proportion of food is imported from out of state and out of the country. As a result, food is not as fresh, extra fuel is consumed in transporting it, excess resources are used in packaging it, and profits are spent outside of the state. Buying local is a key factor in supporting sustainable jobs. It provides local jobs for people in the community, farmers spend their earnings locally which creates other jobs, and it reduces our reliance on oil. If elected, the McCourt-Duncan administration will support local businesses." "We will only provide tax breaks for industries that contribute
substantially back to New York," added Duncan. "We will promote policies
that reward corporations for providing fair and living wage jobs with full
benefits, for recognizing unions in their workplaces, for reinvesting their
profits in New York State, and for protecting the environment. Companies are
currently rewarded for being global. We must reward them for being local." |
